iPhone 4S or Samsung Galaxy S II? That is the question.

Luckily I made it through last month and even had 11p to spare. I’m now looking for easy ways to cut down my spending to prevent the same thing happening again!

Luckily my phone is due for an upgrade so it’s the perfect time to reevaluate my phone plan. I went to the Orange store today intending to replace my iPhone 3G with the new 4S. Because it’s an Apple the whole process is more cumbersome and the iPhone is the only phone in the store that wouldn’t be free with my upgrade.

After pointing this out to me, the guy in the store showed me the Samsung Galaxy S II, nearly exactly the same specifications except with a bigger screen, faster, would be free and I could pay less a month for the contract. But, it’s not an Apple product and lacks the ease of integration with my Mac that the iPhone would afford.

Buying a new phone is a big deal. I am making a two-year commitment without any trial period. That’s longer than any relationship I’ve had. That’s half of college in the States, 2/3 of college in the UK. And I always have the option of breaking up with a boyfriend, or leaving college. My phone is going to be my whole life for the next two years.

I remember reading an article in one of my trade magazines at the office this week that Samsung has beaten the iPhone in sales. Does this mean that If I get the Samsung I won’t be left out of the loop not having access to iTunes and the Apple apps?

I’ve spent all afternoon reading reviews comparing the two and Samsung seems to be winning, so why am I still so reluctant? Will I feel left out being the only one I know without an iPhone? Will there be equivalent apps available so I can write my blog posts on the bus and find out the Chelsea score while having coffee with friends? Will I find a way to transfer my music from iTunes?

Thank you.

I had quite an amazing day today. I got a lot accomplished at work and learned a lot about HTML and Facebook in the process. I also received positive feedback from multiple people I work for.

On my way home I was so happy I was calling my boyfriend and emailing my parents and my sister. When I walked through the door I had a massive grin on my face, over the moon with my day. It was then that I checked the post and saw I had something from Wagamama. Walking down the hall I was trying to guess what was inside. It was heavier than a piece of paper so I assumed it must be a voucher of some kind. I racked my brains trying to remember if I’d entered any competitions lately (I enter a lot…) but couldn’t remember any.

It turns out that one of my most loyal fans who read my blog post earlier this week felt my pain and decided to help me out.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to my baby sister for her very generous and very thoughtful gift! I love you.

Free London

I did something a little dumb this month. Ok, it was downright stupid. I spent the whole month’s pay in the first 10 days of the month. I’m now trying to get to the end of October on £80 and I’m determined to do it.

I decided that it would be too depressing for me to resign myself to sitting at home just because of my poor financial judgment so I set upon the task of planning a fun, free weekend. My boyfriend just bought a MacBook last week so I figured it would be a good exercise for both of us. Read more

Moo Shu – The Daring Cook

The October Daring Cooks’ Challenge was hosted by Shelley of C Mom Cook and her sister Ruth of The Crafts of Mommyhood. They challenged us to bring a taste of the East into our home kitchens by making our own Moo Shu, including thin pancakes, stir fry and sauce.

I couldn’t wait to be accepted as a Daring Cook and to receive the first challenge. If I’m honest, I was slightly disappointed when I saw that it was Moo Shu pork, a dish that I’ve never particularly cared for when my parents order it at restaurants. However, it was great! The recipe was really easy and not nearly as time-consuming as you would think, despite making everything from scratch!  Read more

X Factor

I love the X Factor. Who in the UK doesn’t? Tonight was the first live show of X Factor 2011. 3 of the 4 judges are new, and while I thought I would miss the old ones, I’m loving Kelly Rowland, Tulisa and Gary Barlow. Even Louis seems more objective having told one of his own acts to up his game. Read more

The Daring Kitchen

I’ve recently discovered The Daring Kitchen, an online community of people who love to bake and/or cook. Every month the Daring Bakers and the Daring Cooks are set a challenge (a recipe). The challenges are a secret from the public and everyone who has partaken in the month’s challenge blogs about their experience on the same day each month. Read more

Vintage

I was born in the wrong decade. I should have been born in the late 40′s/early 50′s so that during the 60′s I would be the appropriate age to understand my surroundings and enjoy it. I’ve dressed in 60′s garb every year for Halloween since my first year of uni and vintage shopping is my favourite kind. Read more

Jemma Kidd Makeup Masterclass

Makeup Class TableEver since I was a little girl I have loved makeup. I have a very vivid memory of my first makeup disaster, age seven, when I left my very own bright purple and bright pink lipsticks in the pocket and they went through the wash. Every gift I received for eight years contained some sort of makeup product or palette. As an adult I now work for women’s glossy magazines and have endless products at my disposal. I’m not exaggerating (I know some of you will be shocked) when I say that my bathroom is a danger zone as there is the constant threat that a nail varnish or blush palette will come crashing down off the teeming shelves. (FYI, nail varnish bottles shatter into a million pieces and varnish dries faster than nail salons might have you think. Don’t ask me how I know, my mother would have a conniption.)

Given my love affair with makeup, I was thrilled when my mom bought a Jemma Kidd Masterclass from Keynoir so we could indulge together. My favourite thing in the world is having my makeup done by a professional. My mom could probably think of 100 things she’d rather do so I was very excited that she wanted to take part in something I love to share the time with me.

ApplicationI’ve done the class twice now, once with my mom and once for the hen do. It’s two hours long and the teacher comes to your home and, in our case, transforms the kitchen into a makeup studio. Each place is laid out with all the necessary products and brushes you will need to achieve the days ‘look’. The one negative for me, having done the class twice, is that the look is the same for all classes, although there are rumours that Jemma Kidd is developing classes teaching different looks.

The instruction is great, the teacher taking the time to explain why we use certain products, where, and the effect we’re trying to achieve. We, the students, get to apply it ourselves as the teacher comes around individually to perfect our technique. We want to look like elegant women from magazines after all, not clowns as my dad used to compare me to during my blue mascara phase in high school.

After both experiences all participants came away having had a great time and feeling like they learned new techniques applicable to them. Definitely a great activity for a party or just a fun activity. I can’t wait until they come out with classes teaching more looks! Hopefully soon they’ll also start adding goodie bags to the package so that we can continue to try it ourselves alone!

Hen Do (Bachelorette Party) Playlist

As I mentioned in my last post, I am really not good with music selection. As it is not my strong point, I turned to Google for some inspiration for the Hen Do I hosted last weekend. After pouring over website upon website with only minimal overlap, here is the playlist (or I should say, here are the playlists) I finally compiled. Read more
